It slows down when you lift off

Lift off the accelerator and this car brakes hard on its own. That is normal, and it is feeding range back into the battery (a real gift on long downhills). Ease off gently instead of stabbing the pedal. The brake still works exactly as normal for real stops. On this car regen cannot be turned off.

Read the battery in percent, like your phone. Highway speed and cold both make the mile number optimistic. Below 20% start looking for a charger, try not to arrive under about 10%, and on the road stop at around 80% (the last 20% is slow and can cost you fees).

How to actually make it go

first 60 seconds
There is no start button and no gear stalk on this one. Tap the key card to the driver pillar (or just have your phone on you), press the brake, then shift on the screen: swipe up for Drive, down for Reverse, tap P for Park. Backup P/R/N/D buttons live on the overhead console. Turn signals are on a normal stalk. One catch: a rental is usually not in your Tesla app · driving needs the key card on you (or a phone key if the desk set one up).

If it steers or brakes on its own

If the car ever steers or slows and you did not ask, you are in control instantly: press the brake or turn the wheel. It is an assistant, not a driver. Keep your eyes up and hands on.

Lift-off slows hard

Ease off the accelerator and the car brakes itself, putting range back in the pack. That is normal. Leave more room the first few miles until your foot learns the feel. The brake pedal still does full stops.

Walk away locks it

With the phone key or after a card unlock, walking away with the key usually locks the car. Confirm the mirrors fold or the screen goes dark before you leave the lot the first time.

Trust percent more than miles

The mile estimate is optimistic on highway and cold days. Plan stops from battery percent. Below about 20% start looking; try not to arrive under 10% at a busy site.

Find Drive, feel regen in a quiet street, and confirm walk-away lock once. After that the car is just a car. Everything else is percent, plugs, and return time.
