Pickup checklist

Confirm who pays at the stall

Rules vary by desk and host. Some peer or specialty cars bill the owner first on Superchargers and settle later. Ask at pickup, and do not assume your personal card is on the car.

  • Ask who is billed for Supercharger or DC sessions, and how chargebacks work.
  • Photograph the gauge at pickup and return · match what they expect.
  • Guest protection, deposits, and damage are separate from energy bills when those products exist.
  • If terms mention a Supercharger limit around ~$500, that is for this trip only · check your listing.

Your trip listing and host terms control. ElevnEV does not book rentals or handle Supercharger bills.

Not a manual. Just the few things about this car that surprise people, calibrated to where you put the dial.

It slows down when you lift off

the #1 surprise
Lift off the accelerator and this car brakes hard on its own. That is normal, and it is feeding range back into the battery (a real gift on long downhills). Ease off gently instead of stabbing the pedal. The brake still works exactly as normal for real stops. On this car regen cannot be turned off.

Watch the percent, not the miles

read it like a phone
Read the battery in percent, like your phone. Highway speed and cold both make the mile number optimistic. Below 20% start looking for a charger, try not to arrive under about 10%, and on the road stop at around 80% (the last 20% is slow and can cost you fees).

How to actually make it go

first 60 seconds
There is no start button and no gear stalk on this one. Tap the key card to the driver pillar (or just have your phone on you), press the brake, then shift on the screen: swipe up for Drive, down for Reverse, tap P for Park. Backup P/R/N/D buttons live on the overhead console. Turn signals are on a normal stalk. One catch: a rental is usually not in your Tesla app · driving needs the key card on you (or a phone key if the desk set one up).

If it steers or brakes on its own

safety
If the car ever steers or slows and you did not ask, you are in control instantly: press the brake or turn the wheel. It is an assistant, not a driver. Keep your eyes up and hands on.

Silence means it is on

Key card on the pillar or phone in your pocket, press the brake, and you are ready. No start button, no engine noise. If the screens wake and the doors lock with the card, you are good.

Lift-off slows hard

Ease off the accelerator and the car brakes itself, putting range back in the pack. That is normal. Leave more room the first few miles until your foot learns the feel. The brake pedal still does full stops.

Walk away locks it

With the phone key or after a card unlock, walking away with the key usually locks the car. Confirm the mirrors fold or the screen goes dark before you leave the lot the first time.

Trust percent more than miles

The mile estimate is optimistic on highway and cold days. Plan stops from battery percent. Below about 20% start looking; try not to arrive under 10% at a busy site.

First fifteen minutes

Find Drive, feel regen in a quiet street, and confirm walk-away lock once. After that the car is just a car. Everything else is percent, plugs, and return time.

First fifteen minutes

  1. Card on the pillar (or phone on you), brake in, swipe Drive on the screen.
  2. In a quiet street, lift off once so you feel how hard regen slows you.
  3. Park, walk away with the key, and confirm the car locks before you leave the lot.

Do these in the lot or a quiet street when you can. This is the calm before the day math.

The good stuff

First stall · Tesla Supercharger
  1. Pull into a Supercharger stall and open the charge port (button on the handle or screen).
  2. Plug in. On many brand rentals the car bills the account on the car automatically; no app open needed.
  3. Unplug around 80%. The last 20% is slow, and idle fees can start after a short grace.

If a stall errors, try the neighbor stall before you assume the site is down.

The carpool lane is not yours anymore on the freeway

Since Oct 2025, California's Clean Air Vehicle decal program has ended. A solo EV no longer gets the carpool lane or the I-10 / I-110 toll discount. Riding solo in the HOV lane now risks a ticket around $490. Only use it with the required passengers.
Dated: program ended Sept 30, 2025. A 2027 extension needs federal approval that has not landed. Applies in California only.

Salt air is fine for a weekend; rinse habits help near the beach

Oceanfront parking leaves salt film on glass, cameras, and charge-port seals. You do not need a full detail mid-rental. If you beach-park overnight, wipe the charge port area before you plug in, and avoid high-pressure spray into the port.

Mild weather is a gift; still watch percent around town

SD almost never destroys range the way Phoenix or Denver winter can. That comfort is real. Still read percent, not miles, leave margin for coastal hills and AC, and hit return SOC on purpose. Easy metros are where people forget the desk rule.

Move your car when it is done when charging finishes

The moment charging completes, an idle fee can start ($0.40 to $1.00 per minute), and a busy Supercharger adds a congestion fee. There is usually a 5 minute grace to unplug. This is exactly why we nudge you to stop at 80% and walk back before it finishes.
A real build fires this from a charge-complete signal or your typed-in percent.
Charging complete at 80%. Move within about 5 minutes to avoid a $0.40 to $1.00 per minute idle fee. Desk return is ask at pickup; idle is separate.
